Vintage fishing tackle has become a passion to many collectors. In some cases, fishing tackle collectors are paying large sums of money to obtain vintage lures, reels or fishing rods. Properly identified Ontario and Canadian lure makers are fetching prices in the hundreds of dollars with rare American lures fetching tens of thousands of dollars – one very rare American lure sold for over $100,000 at auction.

Patrick Daradick, a collector of vintage tackle for over 20 years, will be offering free identification and appraisals at this year’s Summer Antiques Sale at Sherway Gardens on Friday August 8th and Saturday August 9th from 1pm – 3pm.

Patrick’s collection of Ontario made vintage tackle is considered to be one of the best in the world and will also be on display. To assist the public with Ontario made fishing lures Patrick has designed a non-profit website to help the public identify their lures. Ontario made lures are often very difficult to identify and value. Unlike U.S. lure companies there are no books to assist the public. Below are some of Patrick’s tips to keep in mind for beginning a collection:
· Lures don't have to be wood to have value. Many plastic and metal lures can also have significant value.
· Lures and other vintage fishing items can draw huge values if they are rare.
· As with all of antiques or collectibles, the items must be excellent condition to obtain top dollar.
· Other items that may have a good value are vintage split shot (weights) tins, paperwork, catalogs, creels (fishing baskets), displays and other memorabilia
