Stanford Summer Thetare's eight-week film series, explores various historical and cultural aspects of Africa, runs every Monday night from June 25 through August 13 at 7:00 pm in Cubberley Auditorium, School of Education (the July 23 screening only will take place in Kresge Auditorium, School of Law, 7:00 pm).

• June 25 A Dry White Season (South Africa), a powerful account of the struggle against apartheid, with Marlon Brando, Donald Sutherland, and the great South-African actors Zakes Mokae, Winston N’tshona, and John Kani (1989)

• July 2 Hotel Rwanda (Rwanda), the inspiring true story of courage during a time of genocidal violence, nominated for multiple Oscars and other awards (2004)

• July 9 Chocolat (Cameroon/France), a beautifully lyrically depiction of the gentle eroticism that surfaces between a European girl and her African servant. (1989)

• July 16 Lumumba (Zaire/Democratic Republic of Congo), the tragic story of the great independence leader, assassinated by the Belgians, with CIA help (2000)

• July 23 Black Gold (Ethiopia), the acclaimed documentary on coffee production that may make you reconsider your trips to Starbucks! (2006)

• July 30 Bamako (Mali), the new hit feature film from Africa, exploring problems with the World Bank and the IMF development models for the region (2006)

• August 6 Sometimes in April (Rwanda), a deeply moving portrayal of genocide survivors trying to rebuild their lives with justice and forgiveness (2005)

• August 13 Tsotsi (South Africa), a beautiful and compelling story of a township hoodlum who finds that his life can have value. Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film (2006)
