Yerba Buena Center for the Arts presents a film series about bad parents, titled We’re A Happy Family: Films About Bad Parents. From funny to ghastly, this two-part series looks at films about dysfunctional parents. If you thought your family was bad, wait until you see these families. The screening of Frank and Cindy on Thursday, April 3 is followed by a one night screening of three rare, ultra-bizarre vintage shorts about bad parents, presented by archivist and raconteur Dennis Nyback, on Saturday, April 19. What:
FRANK AND CINDY
BY G.J. ECHTERNKAMP
Filmmaker in person
This brutally honest documentary starts off as the portrait of a drunken, oafish has-been relegated to pulling weeds and peeing in cans in the basement. But as the story unfolds it becomes apparent that Frank isn’t the only one with issues. Enter Cindy, the filmmaker’s mother, whose daydreams of award ceremonies and famous friends have devolved into a steady stream of white lies, drug-abuse, put-downs and procrastinations. We watch as desperation, humor and a little self-reflection start to bring this unusual family closer together.
