Cert U, 169 mins, Dir:Philip Groning France/Switzerland/Germany 2005.
In 1987 Philip Groning approached the Grande Chartreuse monastery in the French alps to ask if he could make a film about the famously reclusive institution. Thirteen years later he received a positive reply when they finally agreed to his request. On the understanding that no crew members or lights would accompany him, the filmmaker was permitted to live alongside the monks for four months, capturing the essence and every move of these remarkable, devout souls. A truly amazing and eye opening film, audiences will, without doubt, be affected by the tranquility, straightforwardness and beauty of the monastic lifestyle as illustrated in thsi inspiring documentary. Winner of the Special Jury Award at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.
