Flexing Structures Workshop August 1, 2011

In this hands-on workshop, we playfully reveal the surprising topology of space. Under the guidance of renowned geometric artist Professor Caspar Schwabe from Kurashiki University of Science and the Arts, build spectacular geometric artworks out of eco-friendly bamboo rods and specially designed rubber connectors. Everybody can create flexible hyperbolas, kinetic stars, geodesic domes, tensional surfaces, jitterbugs and soccer balls in a relatively short time. Students and designers, teachers and curious children are welcome to discover the exciting world of structures.

Workshop includes the "Kinematic Serendipity Performance" by Professor Caspar Schwabe, which is a demonstration of flexing mathematical models invented by scholars from all over the world. In the course of unfolding them into 'three space', they unveil interesting kinematic phenomena like translation and rotation, explosion and implosion, inversion and gastrulation, loops and jitterbugs.
