In this class you will discuss how various authors' short-shorts (e.g. work by Joyce Carol Oates, Langston Hughes, Raymond Carver, Franz Kafka) are driven by particular elements of craft (tension, plot, subtext, characterization). Next, you will begin to compose your own short-shorts by responding to in-class writing exercises specifically designed to help writers write succinctly while suspending disbelief.
