Stephen has won numerous prizes for his compositions and performances, including an award from the Sur Jerez Flamenco Competition in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain for his original 1st album, "Naranjas Amargas." A versatile artist, he is the winner of the Peter Frampton award for excellence in contemporary music, and his compositions for the guitar have been published in Italy by Bérben and in the United States by Columbia Music Company. He won the Paulo Barsacchi award for guitar composition for his "Sonatina for Solo Guitar," and a Meet the Composer's grant for his realization of Federico García Lorca's romantic ballad, "Romance Sonambulo." He a 2008/2009 winner of a grant from the Spanish Ministry of Culture and U.S. Universities for a new flamenco concert featuring García Lorca's mystical lullaby, "Nana del Caballo Grande."

Stephen studied flamenco guitar in Spain and the U.S. with giants in the field, including Manolo Sanlúcar, Manolo Franco, José Antonio Rodriguez, Manuel Lozano "El Carbonero" and Paco Arroyo. He holds the M.A. degree in musical composition from San Francisco State University.
