Finnish emigration started in the mid 1860s when workers were recruited for the mines in northern Michigan's copper region. Peak years in Finnish emigration occurred between 1893 and 1908, cresting in 1902 when 23,152 Finns left their homeland. The majority initially settled in the upper Midwest.
