From Rigid Structure Artist Renders Images of Chaos

New York, NY July 2005 ? Mark Millene is a product of the same rigidly traditional Bulgarian National Academy of Fine Arts as celebrated conceptual surrealist Christo and as such, Millene's paintings create a stark iconoclastic statement to that of his artistic cultivation.

Millene has seen first hand that borders can change, structures can collapse and the only concrete characteristic of structure in his world is change. His stunningly colorful and ostensibly cheerful work is permeated with both doubt and hope, structure is allowed to fail and then be rebuilt into a uniquely Millene masterpiece. His seemingly abstract canvases all require extensive planning and follow rigid forms where structure is at first observed and studied, before being layered, colored and disguised.

?My goal is to make a full impact, sacrificing neither idea nor execution in the finished work,? says Millene who works with collage, projections, graphic design and an extensive color layering process designed to mimic the precision of a printing press.

In many ways, Millene tends to marry his artistic experiences in Bulgaria and the United States:

?Like many artists who have grown up in a communist state, I see America's freedom more clearly than most of those who have grown up in a democracy. I celebrate choice and allow the viewer to see as many layers as they choose,? states Millene.

In the rules of his work, there exists the possibility to transform and recreate boundaries. There are no absolute truths or clear delineations of right and wrong. Each step is planned and every rule can be broken. Explosion of Color runs from July 25, 2005 until August 10, 2005 at 43 8th Avenue Gallery (cross streets Horatio and Jane).
Established by curator Alex Beitler, 43 8th Avenue Gallery in the West Village features emerging and mid-career fine artists who have come to New York City from all over the world. Mr. Beitler gives each artist a solo exhibit for fifteen days in NYC.
