As the year comes to a close, we are again looking ahead what 2013 will bring.

2012 brought us the "Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act" or JOBS Act, intending to encourage funding of small businesses and creating a mechanism for crowdfunding. Will everybody become a business angel now? Will it enable a whole new generation of lean start-ups, or rather a whole new generation of unsuspecting small investors buying into questionable opportunities? What are the experiences in Germany, where securities law is less restrictive?

2012 was also the year of the big IPO: Facebook went public in the largest tech IPO since the bubble, only to see its price drop by 50% in the aftermath. Will the social networking revolution already be over in 2013, just like 2012 saw renewable energy fall out of favor? With more large technology companies like Twitter still private: will companies retreat to secondary markets and avoid the punishing public exposure all together?

The recent election has confirmed America's continued trust in its democratic leadership. But these upcoming four years will be extremely challenging: The looming deficit and debt burden limit choices for growth; Europe is struggling and even China's growth has slowed down. What can we expect 2013 will bring?
