FILM CRITIC FLOYD LAWRENCE HOSTS AN EVENING OF
TIMELESS CINEMA

THURSDAY MAY 31 7:30PM

The Great Lakes Film Association is proud to announce our new film series Floyd Lawrence Presents hosted each month by veteran film critic Floyd Lawrence. For the inaugural presentation we shall offer a special screening of a timeless classic film The Horses Mouth on May 31st at the Roadhouse Theatre For Contemporary Art, 145 West 11th Street Erie Pa.

Considered among many to be one of the greatest art films ever made, directed by Ronald Neame, and starring the legendary Alec Guinness, The Horses Mouth tells the tale of Gulley Jimson a broke, difficult, conniving, uncouth, and a welcher - but an artist. The visions in his head may not really satisfy him when realized, but the quest continues, for the perfect wall. The Beeders leave for six weeks of vacation and return to find a 7000-pound commitment and the wall of their living room a national treasure, even though living with a wall mural of feet is not their cup of tea. Then - in a bombed out church scheduled for demolition - THE wall that can become his vision.

The Horses Mouth was nominated for numerous Academy Awards including Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.

This 1958 film was adapted from the novel, The Horse's Mouth, the third and most celebrated volume of Joyce Cary's First Trilogy, is perhaps the finest novel ever written about an artist. Its painter hero, the charming and larcenous Gulley Jimson, has an insatiable genius for creation and a no less remarkable appetite for destruction. Is he a great artist? A has-been? Or an exhausted, drunken ne'er-do-well? He is without doubt a visionary, and as he criss-crosses London in search of money and inspiration the world as seen through his eyes appears with a newly outrageous and terrible beauty.

In honor of this film we have organized a show featuring some of the best of Eries own artists including John Vehanian, Fran Schanz, Ed Grout, Rob Weber, Eerie Eric, Steve Mik, Brian Murray, John Delterzo, Tom Drezanski, Jeremy Beightol, and more.

This one night only special event will take place at 7:30pm to be followed by a question and answer session hosted by Floyd Lawrence and his co-host Peggy Brace and a wine and cheese reception.
