On the eve of World War 2, an aristocratic Englishwoman (Nicole Kidman) travels to Australia to join her husband on his cattle ranch, only to find that he has been murdered. She meets a rough-hewn local (Hugh Jackman) and reluctantly agrees to join forces with him to save the land she has inherited.
