This 1978 feature film from Egypt's most acclaimed filmmaker, recently deceased Youssef Chahine, gives an Egyptian point of view on the subject of occupation and colonial reach. Set not during Napoleon's time but rather World War II, the film portrays a wide cross-section of Alexandrians find themselves dealing with a long-time British presence, a new American influx, and possible invasion by Axis powers. As the young protagonist is torn between dreams and great expectations, this heady mix is duly captured by Chahine's ricocheting style of Hollywood and classical references.
