The chaotic annual migration of millions of Chinese factory workers back to their rural hometowns for the lunar New Year becomes the backdrop to this story of a husband and wife torn by the heartache of a self-imposed 16-year separation from their two children. With a keen eye for drama, Canadian director Lixin Fan captures the pathos and the nuance as a rebellious teen daughter snubs her parents' sacrifice and signs on to repeat their cycle as a migrant wage slave.
