FILM ACTIONS V
with LUKE SAVISKY & special guests THE TOSCA STRING QUARTET!
(U.S.A., 2005, 60 Minutes, color & b/w)
Just back from being the featured media artist at the Sundance Film Festival, Luke Savisky presents Film Actions V, the latest in his series of ethereal live projection performances. The visuals will be accompanied live with musical pieces by Graham Reynolds and Stars of the Lid, with a special guest performance by the Tosca String Quartet (fresh from their world tour with David Byrne).
Luke Savisky sees the world differently than you or I do. For him, light is something to be shaped and aimed, inanimate objects can shift, and the moving image is up for reappropriation and can live side by side with the living.
The projection magic of Savisky makes people swim through houses, places feet tickling feet into ceiling corners, makes statues breathe, and floats legs mysteriously in the air without a screen. His canvases are passing trains, human bodies, faces, trees, smoke, and the air itself.
"Film Action" is Savisky's alchemical practice of taking film projection out of the booth and into a variety of fascinating settings. By placing original and found moving images in sculptural, architectural, and natural environments, he warps the perception of time and space that we have learned as moviegoers. Don't miss this mind-bending film experience!
Luke Savisky has created solo and collaborative performances and installations, transforming natural and architectural settings, and nontraditional and traditional art spaces throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Japan. He has also worked with numerous musical groups, including Poi Dog Pondering, the Tosca String Quartet, the Flaming Lips, and Dylan Newcomb. Savisky is the first recipient of the D. Montgomery Award for achievement in art and film from the Austin Film Society, presented by Richard Linklater and experimental filmmaker James Benning.
