The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. The Big Read book this year is "A Lesson Before Dying" by Ernest J. Gaines. In the 1940's South, an African-American man is wrongly accused of killing a white store owner. A local schoolteacher visits the young man while he’s on death row and helps him realize he’s not an animal but a man with dignity. "A Lesson Before Dying" is a television film released in 1999 by HBO adapted from Ernest J. Gaines’ novel. Stars Don Cheadle, Cicely Tyson and Mekhi Phifer. Ages 13-Adult.
