Here is an excerpt from an article in Sept/Oct 2006 issue of New Jersey Countryside Magazine:

The Far Hills Race Meeting: a mix of country and class

For 86 Years the Far Hills Race Meeting has been a day for New Jerseyans to celebrate horse racing in style.

Surrounded by the fall foliage in the heart of New Jersey’s horse country, more than 50,000 people are expected this year at one of the Garden State’s biggest fall equestrian events—the Far Hills Race Meeting on October 28 at Moorland Farms.

The 86th running of the meeting includes seven races, with the highlight being the Breeders’ Cup Steeplechase.

Although the races are the highlight of the event, the day is about more than just horses. The Race Meeting has become well-known for its lavish, extravagant picnics, especially those run by the more than 50 major corporations that attend the event. Many even have the event catered.

But while the audience is eating finely prepared foods, equestrians from all over the nation will compete in the races for prize money totaling more than half a million dollars—the highest in the National Steeplechase Association circuit. Last year the Breeders’ Cup, the biggest race of the day, had a purse of $200,000.

Also, Steeplechase horses are all thoroughbreds, so many come to see the same horses that raced in other prestigious events, such as the Kentucky Derby or the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships.

The event benefits the Somerset Medical Center. The Moorland Farms grounds open to the public at 8 a.m. on Race Day. Post-time for the first race is 12:30 p.m. The Race Meeting will be held rain or shine. General admission tickets prior to the day of the event are $50. A parking pass is $30 (that is for general parking…not the tailgating spot we’ve got…I recommend the train!—DS). . . . Tickets. . . are available from local merchants (visit www.farhillsrace.org for a listing).. . Tickets are non-refundable. DUI laws will be strictly enforced. (another reason to take the train--DS!)…
