PIANIST SARA BUECHER JOINS SINFONIA TORONTO FOR A CANADIAN FIRST

Sinfonia Toronto’s next Masterpiece Series concert will feature an important Canadian premiere, the first performance of a work for piano and orchestra by Czech composer Vitezslava Kapralova.

Pianist Sara Buechner will join Sinfonia Toronto and conductor Nurhan Arman to perform Kapralova’s Partita on Friday, March 11 at 8 pm in Glenn Gould Studio. Ms. Buechner gave the US premiere of this work. She will also be heard in Turina’s Rapsodia Sinfonica. The orchestra will also perform Brahms’ Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Handel and JUNO-award winning Canadian composer Marjan Mozetich’s Fantasia.

In commenting on this program, Maestro Arman said that “Vitezslava Kapralova was a brilliant woman. She was poised to have a major career, both as a composer and conductor. Her death at age 25 was a great tragedy. I am delighted to conduct the Canadian premiere of her Partita and bring her music to the attention of Canadian listeners.”

Sara Davis Buechner has been celebrated as a pianist of noteworthy accomplishment, virtuosic mastery, artistic sensitivity and extraordinary versatility. With an active repertoire of nearly 100 piano concertos ranging from Bach to Wuorinen, she has appeared as soloist with such prominent orchestras as the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Saint Louis and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras, Japan Philharmonic, City of Birmingham Symphony and BBC Philharmonic.

Acclaimed as “a world-class ensemble” by Germany’s Russelsheimer Echo, Sinfonia Toronto is one of Canada’s finest chamber orchestras. Its repertoire includes all the major works for string orchestra from baroque to contemporary, and it has premiered many new works. It is based at CBC Glenn Gould Studio, where many of its concerts have been recorded for national broadcast. Other recordings include a CD of works by Mendelssohn, Shostakovich and Khachaturian; a world-premiere recording of the newly discovered J.S. Bach aria ‘Alles mit Gott,’ released by Analekta on iTunes; and the JUNO winner Flanders Field Reflections, a Marquis Classics (EMI) CD of music by John Burge.

Sinfonia Toronto’s Music Director Nurhan Arman has conducted throughout the world to great critical acclaim. His upcoming international engagements include performances with the Moscow Philharmonic, Belgrade Philharmonic and Mexico’s UANL Monterrey Symphony.
