In this heart-warming film, precocious eleven-year-old Akeelah from south Los Angeles is found to have an affinity for spelling. Despite her mother’s objections, Akeelah enters a contest and eventually finds herself at the National Spelling Bee. A mysterious teacher and a cast of colorful characters from her neighborhood help her along her journey.
Campus Life and the Children’s Literature program team up once again to give students and families a free activity on Sundays. The films chosen are based on great works of children’s literature. Following the film screening, optional discussions are facilitated by EMU students and faculty. The Family Film Series is free (including free parking) and open to anyone.
