Why does poetry speak so clearly to the human spirit? Are you intrigued by the creative capacity that words have to express emotion? In this course, we will be encouraged to ponder the causes and consequences of the poet's connection with us as readers. As part of that we will consider a range of forms, techniques and poetic elements in the context of contemporary, classical, famous and lesser known literary works. We will apply the 6 Facets of Understanding by Wiggins and McTighe to the exploration and analysis of not only the works themselves but to our interpretations of the published and original poems considered. Participants will need to bring a sense of confidence, competency and courage to embark on the creative and critical journey planned. The material presented will deal with complex and sophisticated themes and advanced poetic elements. Students may be new to any formal study of poetry or may have some personal favourites already that they could bring to share with the group. The course will culminate with an intimate showcase of the students' work over a light lunch on the last day. This course is suitable for students in Years 5 to 6.
