Literacy Volunteers of Maine presents its premier benefit event featuring the exclusive Maine appearance of Vicki Myron, author of #1 New York Times bestseller DEWEY: THE SMALL-TOWN LIBRARY CAT WHO TOUCHED THE WORLD. Don Carrigan, reporter for NEWS CENTER, and ‘handler' of Maine's own Togus The Cat, will be Master of Ceremonies. The evening also unveils a statewide traveling photography exhibition celebrating real Maine people whose lives have been changed by achieving literacy, as created by students from the Maine College of Art.

Published in over 30 countries, DEWEY is the true story of how an abandoned kitten, adopted by the local library, uplifted the spirits of Iowa townspeople during a recession and then became world famous. The story is currently in development to be a major film starring Meryl Streep.

Opening at 5:15 pm with a jazz reception, the September 17th benefit includes hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction, cash bar, sales of Ms. Myron's books, fun merchandise, author Q & A, book signing and more! Ms. Myron's new picture book version "Dewey...There's a Cat in the Library!" will also be on sale at the event.

Purchase tickets at Borders Books in South Portland & Brunswick; Dyer Library/Saco Museum in Saco; Nonesuch Books in Saco & South Portland; Books, Etc. in Falmouth; Longfellow Books in Portland; online at www.lvmaine.org; or call 1-800-322-5455 or 207-773-3191.
