The aim of Fabos Conference 2010

Fábos Conference on Landscape planning and Greenways in 2010 is organised to highlight recent trends in landscape and greenway planning around the world, as well as to expand the literature about greenways. Furthermore, the aim is to explore how landscape architects and planners from different countries have approached greenway planning and to understand how greenways have been tailored to each county’s unique geographical, cultural, and political circumstances.

History of Fabos Landscape Planning and Greenway Symposiums

Symposiums were organised in 2004 and 2007 in the USA at the University of Massachusetts, in Amherst. This event brought together experts who are influencing landscape planning, policy making and planning theory from the local to international level. Innovative greenway planning techniques, partnership development, advances in landscape planning research, and greenway implementation strategies. The Fábos Fund is sponsoring events in every three years and in year 2010 UMASS organises Fabos Landscape Planning and Greenway Conference with partner Corvinus University of Budapest in Hungary.

Conference Themes in 2010

PLANNING FOR CHANGE: The world is in a state of change, — socially, economically, politically, and ecologically. From global climate change to urbanization, planners and landscape architects are grappling with unprecedented change as they respond to growing demand for limited resources. This theme underlies each of this year’s Fabos Symposium topic areas:

Greenway Planning: Planning for linear corridors of green space has occurred across multiple scales — national, state or province, and municipal. This track will cover innovations in greenway planning that span research, policy, and practice with a focus on cultural landscape planning, recreational, and ecological corridors.

Landscape Planning: Planning for new land uses while protecting ecological integrity and ecosystem services is the theme for landscape planning. This includes green infrastructure, ecological networks, and urban planning solutions.

Landscape Design: An important aspect of planning is the final design and implementation of landscapes along a corridor. This topic area includes park design, urban plazas, historic sites, and other site scale solutions that incorporate the larger planning context.
