Cinematic Symmetries
McBean Theater, Noon, 2pm, and 4pm

Eights (1993, 5 min.), by Seth Olitzky, explores illusions of three dimensions with colorful, kaleidoscopic imagery inspired by symmetry and abstract forms.

In Two Space (1979, 8 min.), by Larry Cuba, two-dimensional patterns are generated though a set of symmetry operations—translations, rotations, and reflections—performed on a basic figure or tile. This animation also explores color afterimages and the illusion of figure/ground reversal.

Euclidean Illusions (1980, 9 min.), by Stan Vanderbeek, is a computer-animated geometric fantasy developed while Vanderbeek was an artist-in-residence at Houston’s NASA Space Center. Made in conjunction with Richard Weinberg with music by Max Vanderbeek.
