Russian Literature throughout the twentieth centrury to the present is a multi-faceted phenomenon steeped in contradictions and beauty. It is a rich and captivating testimony to the cultural heritage of Russia which continues to inspire writers everywhere. From Akhmatova, Bulgakov and Pasternak, to Solzhenitsyn and Makine, it is this unique heritage that enabled Russian writers to survive in the face of their own fearful history. Through seminars, discussions, extracts from films and documentaries, this course will examine closely the phenomenon of Russian literature and the remarkable lives of those who have shaped it.
