Digitally rendered and printed on vinyl, Friedhard Kiekebens installation creates the illusion of space and expanded scale through the use of abstract marks and repetition. In Loop, images are warped, twisted and expanded to transform a normally solid minimalist grid into a simulated flow pattern. The artwork in Loop spans the 90 foot long wall of Gallery 2 and is produced in segments of digital inkjet prints that are then assembled as wall paper. Although derived from simple materials the piece becomes complex and dynamic by means of repetition and the use of exuberant manipulations. The all-encompassing nature of the wall paper and the effects of Kiebekens signature marks exaggerate the perceived size of the gallery space as well as the viewers own sense of scale. Surrounded by the undulating images, the viewer experiences the almost physical sensations of vibration and oscillation. A connected series of smaller prints made by using his signature non-toxic etching techniques are also included in the exhibition.Friedhard Kiekeben trained at the Royal College of Art, London and in Frankfurt, Germany. After fifteen years living in the UK, he is now based in Chicago where he is a professor of printmaking at Columbia College. His works often include site-specific installations and are exhibited internationally in private and public galleries and museums. He has co-published books on innovative printmaking methods including The Contemporary Printmaker (Write Cross Press, 2003). Date : September 27 - January 10, 2010Location : Gallery 2
