The art group Asco began in the 1970s as a tight-knit core of Chicano artists from East Los Angeles. Together, they responded to the city’s turbulent socio-political period through performance, public, and multimedia art. In fact, one of their many notable works was Spray Paint LACMA, where they did just that, in response to an absence of Chicano artwork in the museum. Now, nearly forty years later, LACMA is pleased to host the first retrospective of this seminal conceptual art group.
