The Virginia Holocaust Museum will host “2065- A Healed Memory,” an exhibition by Thea Weiss from July 1st through August 15th, 2010.
The collection focuses on the experience, memories, & ultimately the survival of Lotte Weiss, a Czechoslovakian Jew and the artist’s mother-in-law.
As the only survivor of her family, Mrs. Weiss says the artwork “reminds her of the first 18 years of her life” and the family she lost during her three years of internment at Auschwitz and Birkenau.
“None of my work is something you should be afraid of. It’s much of an abstract interpretation [of memories and recurring symbols and phrases]” Weiss says.
The collection’s title, “2065- A Healed Memory,” was inspired from a quote by Lewis Smedes, a former professor at Fuller Theological Seminary, “forgiving does not erase the bitter past. A healed memory is not a deleted memory. Instead, forgiving what we cannot forget creates a new way to remember.”
The exhibit’s nineteen works come from Sydney, Australia where they were first unveiled at the Mary Place Gallery.
