Steve Luxenberg, associate editor at The Washington Post, is the author of the acclaimed non-fiction book Annie's Ghosts: A Journey into a Family Secret, an account that is part memoir, part social history, and part detective story. Luxenberg, whose family emigrated from the Ukraine to Detroit in the early 1900s, uses his investigative skills to understand why his mother hid the existence of her younger, disabled sister, Annie, who was committed at age 21 to Eloise Hospital, a psychiatric facility in Wayne County. This is a moving and disturbing story that Luxenberg tells with insight and grace. It also reveals largely forgotten aspects of the history of twentieth century Michigan and Ann Arbor's neighboring counties.
