Ngs princess productions proudly presents evanescence: made in
canada/fait au canada, an evening of both world and Toronto premieres
from the evocative and exquisitely unique Holly Small (Toronto) and the
upcoming innovative Freya Olafson (Winnipeg).Now in its sixth season, d:mic/fac is a bi-annual festival of contemporary Canadian
dance pairing emerging and established artists. It is a noted platform
for nurturing new choreographic talent through a mentoring experience,
as well as inspiring cross-disciplinary collaboration by hosting a
venue for visual artists, this time with visual artist, Lindy Pole.The
world premiere of Radiant by Holly Small is an inter-disciplinary
collaboration with Toronto-based composer/media artist John Oswald and
theatre designer, Emile Morin from Quebec City. Radiant is a 30-minute piece for five dancers,
five trombone players, a musician performing on laptop computer, and a
series of morphing video projections. Small explains: This theme of
disappearance is something I have explored in previous works. I am
haunted by the disappearance of our most precious resources. People
disappear, cultures and languages disappear, species of birds and
animals disappear, and whole forests......disappear. The sense of loss
overwhelms me. And while this piece is as much concerned with form as
it is with "message", I want to leave the audience with a visceral
feeling that something precious is slipping beyond our reach.From the infectious diseases of
1875 to the blithering cold of both then and now, join
creator/performer Freya Olafson on the path to uncover and celebrate
ones pioneer within! New Icelander (Toronto Premiere) is the latest
of Freya Olafsons investigation into the lives of the first Icelandic
immigrants to Canada. In this new multimedia performance, Ms. Olafson
draws parallels between the cross-cultural experiences of her 19th
century ancestors and her own present-day identity. Ms. Olafson references the Icelandic River Saga written by Manitoban genealogist,
Nelson Gerrard, chronicling the history of the settlement of New
Iceland, north of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Through the manipulation of both
the visual images and stories within this saga, Freya is able to
interpret history, figuratively resurrect her ancestors and in the
process discover and create her own mythology.
