Time Stands Still by Donald Margulies

When Sarah, a photojournalist specializing in combat, comes back to her Brooklyn apartment after nearly losing her life to a roadside bomb in Iraq, she finds her world turned upside down. James, her reporter boyfriend, who suffered an emotional breakdown in Iraq and returned to the States shortly before her brush with death, no longer shares her compulsion to cover global carnage and wants to trade that life for a more normal, married one with her. Meanwhile, their friend and editor, Richard, has a new, much younger girlfriend, Mandy, whom Sarah dismisses as shallow and naïve but who raises serious challenges to Sarah’s ideal of witnessing without involvement. Margulies shows that domestic conflicts between one’s professional and personal commitments can be nearly as intractable as international ones between armed groups.
