About the organisation:

MIDEFEHOPS (International Movement for the Social Promotion of Children, Women and the Elderly) is an NGO which provides care and support to some of the most vulnerable children in Goma, including children living in the streets, children separated from their families, and children orphaned by AIDS.

Offering protection to 161 children living in the streets between the ages of 5 and 15, MIDEFEHOPS provides residence, food and psychosocial support, and successfully reunified 98 of these children with their families. It also conducted outreach with young people to help prevent the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Funds are still needed to support the many thousands of children who remain extremely vulnerable in Goma….

After spending some time in parts of Africa (Liberia & Congo, DRC), Dave Noble (aka Natureboy) has pulled together a fine selection of top class artists to provide an evening of world/fusion music in support of raising funds for continuing the music project developed at Midefehops.

About the artists:

Sirishkumar- tabla Sirishkumar was a child prodigy taught by his father, and has developed into one of the most sought after tabla players.

Sirish is no ordinary player. His talent is an asset to anyone he accompanies, . He worked with a long list of greats including Ennio Morricone, Kiki Dee and Rolf Harris to name a few,as well as numerous Indian classical musicians..

Jali Fily Cissokho - Kora - Virtuoso Kora Player and Praise Singer (Griot), Jali Fily hails from Ziguinchor in Southern Senegal.

Fily was born into the famous Cissokho family of Griots and was taught to play the Kora (a 21 string African Harp) at the age of 6 by his father Jali Kemo Cissokho and later by his older brother Solo Cissokho. His mother, singer Bintou Konte Cissokho, gave him the historical stories and songs.

Recent UK appearances have included the WOMAD, Glastonbury and Larmer Tree Festivals.

When you ask Fily about his music he replies "It's in my blood."

Jack Pescod - piano Jack is a dynamic and innovative young jazz pianist who plays in a number of ensembles including Barcode. "His music recalls the party groovism of Ramsay Lewis, the lighter side of Keith Jarret and the pop-crossover fizz of Esbjorn Svensson." -John L Walters (The Guardian)

"Jack Pescod has that rare talent for combining rhythmic drive and sparkling improvisation in melodies bristling with irresistible hooks." -Garry Booth (BBC music magazine)

Dave Noble guitar/sitar - Dave Noble otherwise known as Natureboy, is a multi instrumentalist who plays and writes with an honesty that comes from the heart. Known for his expressive and versatile guitar playing, and a natural skill for crafting melodic songs.

Fourteen years of conflict in North Kivu, eastern DRC, have led to entrenched levels of poverty, corroded health and education systems, and weakened family and community support networks. Children's lives have been dramatically altered by the direct experience of war: many no longer have the opportunity to go to school, parents are unable to provide for their most basic needs, and risks of recruitment to the fighting forces or sexual violence are part of children's everyday reality. The situation in North Kivu is grim, but there are people actively fighting for positive change, giving everything to improve the lives of children. MIDEFEHOPS (International Movement for the Social Promotion of Children, Women and the Elderly) is one such NGO, which provides care and support to some of the most vulnerable children in Goma, including children living in the streets, children separated from their families, and children orphaned by AIDS.

With its priority on education for children, MIDEFEHOPS supported the payment of school fees and material support for 150 vulnerable children in 2007. Offering protection to 161children living in the streets between the ages of 5 and 15, MIDEFEHOPS provided residence, food and psychosocial support, and successfully reunified 98 of these children with their families and provided follow-up support with their communities. As part of its community education activities, MIDEFEHOPS conducted outreach with young people to help prevent the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. Peace and conflict resolution sessions also helped to resolve local conflicts, over land access. Through efforts to reduce their dependence on aid agencies, MIDEFEHOPS cultivates one and a half hectares of land for beans, corn and sweet potatoes, and since 2007, has operated a bakery, the proceeds of which were able to pay the school fees for 40 orphaned children.

MIDEFEHOPS proves the resilience of the Goma community, highlighting the possibilities for improving the lives of children. However, the political and economic situation on the ground means that support from outside donors is still needed. The pervasive insecurity in North Kivu continues to force large population displacements and separation of children from their families, while the conditions of poverty continue to render families unable to care effectively for their children. Funds are still needed to support the many thousands of children who remain extremely vulnerable in Goma….
