Energy - photographs by Yann-Arthus Bertrand. The Earth is a source of heat, due to geophysical phenomena that occur in the engine of plate tectonics. It is released during volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. The temperature of the basement increases with the depth of about 3C up to 100m and 10C in some areas particularly active. The operation of the heat of the earth (geothermal) could represent a potential renewable energy but the exploitation of this is still undeveloped but the projects are multiplying around the world. Some are supported by the European Union. Energy is the life. It allows human beings to grow, to breathe, to move and to reproduce. To develop, human societies have, over a period of time, used various forms of energy: muscle (human and animal), water, wind, wood, sun, atom, oil XXth century was characterized by new production techniques and of distribution, constantly improving their efficiency, in order to meet the demand of growing consumption of energy. Energy efficiency of oil, coal, natural gas, nuclear power has led to a real technical revolution in the way of life, travel, production and consumption. The ocean, untapped power The ocean covers 70% of the surface of the Earth. Wave, ocean currents, submarines and tides are the different manifestations of this kinetic energy. The latter, inexhaustible on a human scale, can be converted into electricity by various devices, such as factories or new wave 'hydrolienne'. These systems are still few and largely experimental. They have to adapt to a difficult environment. The ocean is thus a less explored potential energy, accessible for the moment to the immediate coastal populations only. In France, the plant of the Rance tidal inaugurated in 1966 remains one of the most powerful of the world.
