Encuentro Internacional de Jazz y Musica Viva May 5, 2009

In its seventh year, the Encuentro Internacional, Monterrey continues to provide the highest quality Jazz concerts for its community.
The realization of the Encuentro, whilst submerged in the realities of our city, has taken hard work and dedication. Today we celebrate with great pride and satisfaction as this event grows and thrives, taking us forever forward.  Monterrey continues to be Mexico’s city of progress and art and improvised music are no exception to this rule. 
It is a deep pleasure to receive first-time collaborators and see the return of others who have already left their mark on the city’s artistic scene such as Gebhard Ullmann, Alex Coke, and the long awaited return of Ramón Lopez. Almut Kuehne and Laurent de Wilde make their debut appearances along with the legend and grand maestro, Joe Fonda.
This year promises to be on a par with the greatest jazz festivals worldwide and includes excellent musicians who can be considered cultural ambassadors for their respective countries.
As the audience, you are the people who make the time and energy invested by individuals and institutions alike, a worthwhile endeavour.  I hope this will be embraced by all as the most valuable gift jazz has ever bestowed on Monterrey.

European Concert

Inauguration Concert
Opening concert with all visiting artists. The theme is Jazz in Europe and the artists from the “old continent” will choose the repertoire to be presented, inviting the other musicians to collaborate in the realization of these pieces. With special appearances by Gebhard Ullmann, Laurent de Wilde, Ramón López and Almut Kuehne.
 
“Berlin Suite – Tribute Concert”
 
Thursday 7th May / 8:30pm
Second Concert.
Tribute concert to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the reunification of Germany.
World premier of Berlin Suite by maestro Gebhard Ullmann, with the participation of all visiting artists.
 
”Hispanic Concert”
Friday 8th May/ 8:30pm
Music from Mexico, Latin America, new compositions by Omar Tamez and the special presentation of Songs of the Spanish Civil War by Ramón López and Omar Tamez
 
 
“USA Concert”
Saturday 9th May/ 8:30pm
CLOSING Concert
Fourth and final concert this year with the participation of all visiting artists.
The theme is Jazz in the USA and the artists from this country will choose the repertoire and invite the other musicians to join them in the realization of these pieces.
Special appearances by Alex Coke and Joe Fonda.

Centro de las Artes invites musicians interested in participating in the courses and workshops that will take place during the Encuentro from 6th to 9th May 2009.
 
Workshop: The Jazz Language and Improvisation in Modern Jazz.
 
Given by Gebhard Ullmann 6th and 8th May from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.
The quantity of participants is limited to 12 and the level is intermediate.
 
 Jazz Ensamble.
Workshop given by Joe Fonda 7th and 9th May, from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.
Maximum 20 students.
 
 
Those interested should enroll in Servicios Educativos in Centro de las Artes 2, Parque Fundidora; Entrance on Av. Madero, open on weekdays from 10:00am to 5:00pm.
Enrolment deadlines are at the beginning of each course. Students will be required to provide their own equipment, ie - instruments, amplifiers, music stands etc.
Participants will take part in the concert on 8th and 9th May. All students will receive a diploma at the end of each workshop.
Anybody interested may observe the workshops free of charge but will they not be permitted to participate.
