Encounters with Social Justice May 1, 2009

Among the more than one million Calgarians, there are perhaps hundreds of individuals and organizations making a difference, daily, on the local social justice scene. Meet some of them at the Third Annual Social Justice Encounter.

- Create and celebrate collaborations and learning circes
- Create a space to share stories of social justice
- Be one who makes a difference

The event—organized by the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Social Work, community agencies and citizens - is aimed at providing mutually concerned Calgarians with a day-long forum for dialogue on some of the most pressing social issues of the day.

The event will feature learning circles, open-space discussions and workshops on a number of topics aimed at fostering greater dialogue and community action. Among the topics to be explored are prevention of homelessness, leadership and politics, economics and envisioning communities and citizenship.

The Social Justice Encounter was established in 2007, a collaborative creation of the U of C’s Faculty of Social Work, educators, academics and community organizations. The founding objective was to end social and political apathy and recover a sense of radical hope and the courage to put it into practice.
At the Encounter, the third annual Legacy of Social Justice awards will be presented to a few inspirational Calgarians in recognition of their efforts in promoting and advancing social justice locally.
