Writer/director/narrator Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Rescue Dawn) confirms his standing as poet laureate of men in extreme situations. With this visually stunning exploration, Herzog travels to the Antarctic community of McMurdo Station, headquarters of the National Science Foundation and home to eleven hundred people during the austral summer (October-February). Over the course of his journey, Herzog examines human nature and Mother Nature, juxtaposing breathtaking locations with the profound, surreal, and sometimes absurd experiences of the marine biologists, physicists, plumbers and truck drivers who choose to form a society as far away from the rest of society as one can get.
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT - I wanted to go to Antarctica after seeing underwater pictures of an otherworldly environment, that were taken by a friend of mine, an expert diver, who captured a frozen world unlike anything I had ever seen before. I accompanied a group of scientists and researchers headed for McMurdo Station in the massive Ross Sea.
I did not expect pristine landscapes and men living in blissful harmony with fluffy penguins, but I was still surprised to find McMurdo looking like an ugly mining town filled with caterpillars and noisy construction sites.

But – McMurdo is filled with professional dreamers and wonderful stories. - Werner Herzog

“Few filmmakers make the end of days seem as hauntingly beautiful as Werner Herzog does in Encounters at the End of the World.” Manohla Dargis – New York Times

“The best thing about Herzog's films is that he follows his instincts and lets his curiosity lead him to the next sequence.” Jeffrey M. Anderson – Combustible Celluloid
