Drawing inspiration from the great American poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, the Emerson Quartet approaches each performance with an insight, enthusiasm and technical mastery easily connected to its namesake. It stands alone in the history of string quartets with an unparalleled list of achievements over three decades: more than thirty acclaimed recordings produced with Deutsche Grammophon since 1987, eight Grammy Awards (including two for Best Classical Album, an unprecedented honor for a chamber music group), three Gramophone Awards, and the coveted Avery Fisher Prize. Their PCMS program includes string quartets by Haydn and Schubert and the Philadelphia premiere of Lawrence Dillon's "Into the Night", a new piece based on a Welsh tune that, in the composer’s words, takes listeners on a “dizzying and dazzling journey from twilight to twilight.”
