Did SOX have the intended effect? Is it a success? Has similar Canadian regulation been appropriate for our particular markets and culture?

Governance expert, Janis Riven, will provide a review of the changing landscape of governance since the emergence of Sarbanes Oxley and similar legislation and regulation to deal with the 'Enron Scandals' almost 10 years ago.The discussion will cover the costs and benefits that have emerged from SOX, from both a regulatory and a business viewpoint. As well, very recent proposals for changes to the current regulatory frameworks for governance in Canada will be explained. Participants will have an opportunity to share their own views in this interactive discussion.Ms. Riven is Immediate Past President of Chartered Secretaries Canada, the Canadian division of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA), an international teaching organization focused on governance. She currently serves as a director on the International Council of ICSA and as President of the Quebec Branch. Ms. Riven is a member of the Quebec Bar and a Fellow of the ICSA. Her other board experience includes the Financial Womens Association of Quebec, Stratford Arts Foundation, and the Advisory Council of the University Scholarship Fund .
