‘Elemental’ features works made from fire, wood, water, metal and earth: the basic elements in traditional Chinese philosophy. The exhibited glass pieces, ceramics and wood and lacquer paintings are representative of the emergent world of contemporary sculptural art in China. Some require ancient techniques that are contextualized in our modern times; others experiment with new techniques using traditional materials and themes. The result is beauty that harks back to ‘what was’ yet presses on and beckons ‘what is to come.’

The twocities gallery specializes in contemporary art formed in glass, metal, ceramic and wood, including wood and lacquer and jewelry. Each of these media has unique qualities that shape the artist’s ability to express ideas, feelings and to make social commentary. Each medium presents special challenges; restraining and freeing expression in turn.
