Social and political engagement are at the heart of “White Flag,” a concert presented by Chamber Music Now! on Saturday, October 20 at 8 p.m. at the Community Education Center in West Philadelphia. In "White Flag,"Jacob TV's new work of the same name is premiered in Philadelphia by rock quartet Electric Kompany, which commissioned the piece. White Flag includes excerpts of videos posted on YouTube.com by American soldiers stationed in Iraq and mimics the cadences of their speech. Additionally, premiers by Kristin Hevner and Philadelphian David Laganella are performed by the group. Also on the program is Newspeak, an ensemble influenced by rock, improvisation, and contemporary composition, and committed to putting forth a progressive message through music. Complementary to the music is an installation in the theater by visual artist Daniel Heyman that takes the human rights abuses at Abu Ghraib as its subject. Some material in this concert may not be appropriate for young audiences. For tickets or more info, call 215-605-9988 or visit www.chambermusicnow.org
