“El Día del Español” / “Spanish Day” June 19, 2009

Spanish is the fourth most spoken language in the world, used by some 450 million people. In honor of this, the Instituto Cervantes headquarters in Madrid is proud to present the worldwide premiere of “El Día del Español” / “Spanish Day”, which will be launched simultaneously in over 40 different countries. In collaboration with the Chicago Independent Film Festival and the Junta de Andalucía, there will be an open house celebrating the Spanish language and its rich and varied vocabulary. There will be different activities all day for families and visitors, including art gallery tours, film screenings, vocabulary building, and a book presentation.

In preparation for the “Spanish Day” celebration, the Instituto Cervantes has launched a platform that encourages people from all over the world to vote for their favorite Spanish word and even invent terms that they think should be added to the language.
