Carleton College will observe El Día de los Muertes (Day of the Dead) on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. with a observance in the Sayles-Hill Balcony. The event is free and open to the public.

The Day of the Dead is a celebration of the memory of deceased ancestors coinciding with the similar Roman Catholic celebrations of All Saints Day and All Souls Day. Origins for the Day of the Dead can be traced back to the Aztec, Maya, Purepecha, Nahual and Totonac cultures of Latin America. It is celebrated in Latino and Filipino cultures.

The observance will have a traditional altar and service with poems, singing and dancing to reflect the meaning of the day in Latino cultures and to remember the lives of loved ones. The observance will be led by Carleton students senior Marlene Cervantes and sophomores Monica Diaz and Erica Martinez.
