Up to 15,000 runners are set to take part in the second EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon on Sunday 11 October 2009. This year, EDF Energy is encouraging all runners to join Team Green Britain to help win the race against climate change.

Launched by EDF Energy in July this year, Team Green Britain (www.teamgreenbritain.org) is an online community designed to encourage the nation to take action towards a more sustainable lifestyle. EDF Energy is encouraging all race entrants to follow the online training tool designed to help runners with energy saving tips for the home and other ideas to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.

Race entrants who join Team Green Britain will also help make the 2009 EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon Europe’s first certified responsible race – accredited by the Council for Responsible Sport.

This year’s event will again start on Cambridge Street in Birmingham Paradise Circus and finish on Broad Street, and will be held on the same morning as the 18th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships, which are expected to attract some of the world’s finest runners to the city.

Hilary Walkman, Head of Sponsorship, EDF Energy comments: “We want to encourage as many people as possible to participate in this event whilst also using it as an opportunity for runners to follow a more sustainable lifestyle and join the thousands of others who have already pledged to do something green for the team in the race against climate change.”

Councillor Martin Mullaney, Birmingham City Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture said: “Last year’s EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon was a huge success attracting nearly 9,000 entrants and this year we are giving runners the chance to follow in the footsteps of the world’s best runners in the 18th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. We are delighted to be a part of Team Green Britain and encourage all race entrants and supporters to also sign up at www.teamgreenbritain.org
