Sara Howsam, seeks to capture the beauty of the square while celebrating the complex, rhythmic qualities of the natural world. The square symbolizes 4 elements of nature: earth, fire, wind and water. The ancient Chinese perceived the world as made up of round sky and square earth. The square format allows Howsam to create modular paintings that can be arranged and rearranged in a variety of groupings creating a mosaic pattern.
