On March 27, 2010, at 8:30 p.m., millions of people around the world will demonstrate concern about the future of the planet by doing something simple yet remarkable--they will turn out their lights for one hour. Earth Hour is designed to remind us that by working together, we all have a role to play in solving one of the most critical issues of our times.

The Energy and Environment Protection Club care very much about the future of our planet and are planning to participate in Earth Hour. We urge VIT to take part in Earth Hour 2010. By agreeing to turn off all non-essential lighting controlled by VIT during the event and encouraging the participation of all our citizens, you will help lead the burgeoning global resolve to take urgent action on climate change—to insure the future of our children and their children. Earth Hour also provides an excellent forum for all citizens, including business, individuals, parents and educators, to hold meaningful discussions about the ways that our community can act to be part of the solution.

During Earth Hour 2008, lights dimmed at Sydney’s Opera House, Rome’s Coliseum and New York’s Empire State Building. Even Google’s homepage went black. In Israel, President Shimon Peres personally turned off lights in Tel Aviv, joining the more than 50 million people who participated in Earth Hour last year.

In March 2009, hundreds of millions of people took part in the third Earth Hour. Over 4000 cities in 88 countries officially switched off to pledge their support for the planet, making Earth Hour 2009 the world’s largest global climate change initiative.

Earth Hour 2010 will be even bigger. It is a global call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world. It is a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future. We hope VIT will join us by turning off the lights of TT, Hex, Main gate and Individual contribution to switch off lights in our rooms in the hostels.

A commitment to Earth Hour would enable all of us here in VIT to not only express our concern about our planet, but to let the world know that we stand with them in seeking to find solutions to the rapidly escalating climate crisis.
