Grandmother Maria Alice is a member of the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers who represent a global alliance of prayer, education and healing for our Mother Earth and all her inhabitants. One of the Council’s goals is to “. . protect our diverse cultures: lands, medicines, language and ceremonial ways of prayer through projects that educate and nurture our children.” Addressing the Grandmothers Council for the first time, Grandmother Maria Alice Campos Freire said, "I believe we have all been guided to be here and we will be guided to do what we came here to do. We cannot say we are of this race or that one. We have all been everything in our many lives, and now our paths cross for us to connect from many different faiths and cultures. But we are all the same flame in life.”
