"Time and again, I have realized that without my art, I would likely be dead." - Dylan Scholinski

At age 15, Daphne Scholinski was diagnosed as an "inappropriate female" and was committed to a mental hospital. She spent the next three years undergoing treatments to make her more feminine, but when the insurance ran out, she was discharged. She was 18.

Now 40, Daphne has become Dylan, and Dylan is a distinguished artist, an author - "The Last Time I Wore a Dress: A Memoir" (Penguin/Putnam) - and a public speaker on issues of gender and mental health. He has appeared on 20/20, Today, and Dateline to discuss his experiences.

Scholinski's art brings together the pain of his past with the triumph of survival. In his paintings, there is anguish, but there is also acceptance of self; there is obvious pain, but there is also a certain joy in knowing that by getting it onto canvas, the pain does not win. We sincerely hope you can make it to this amazing show.
