Many of the Netherlands' greatest 17th-century painters are represented in this intimate exhibition of privately held gems. Displayed among the fine antiques of the Museum's Kaufman Furniture Gallery are portraits of a wealthy Calvinist couple by Gerard Ter Borch, a candlelit morality scene by Godfried Schalcken, and an expressive likeness of a Haarlem historian by Frans Hals. The highlight is a one-time genre painting of a Russian-garbed man; only recently, after the removal of layers of over-painting, has the work been acknowledged as a self-portrait by Rembrandt van Rijn.
