Dub Poetry originated in the political and creative hub of Jamaica in the late 1970's, when DJ's began to chant over the "dub" or instrumental side of records. Strongly influenced by reggae music, Dub Poetry drew on the African Caribbean oral tradition of proverbs, riddles, nursery rhymes, hymns and ring games. Playful and passionate, whether spoken acapella or backed by a band, Dub is infused with themes of Black liberation, Justice and the struggles of the poor and marginalized. Dub poetry began as, and remains, rebel poetry. Brought to Toronto in the 80's, Dub's flourishing presence in Canada today is a testament to its legacy and value in the weave of Canadian cultural life.
