Instituto Cervantes presents the first Chicago exhibition of the contemporary Spanish cartoonist Andrés Rábago (known as El Roto), renowned for his satirical cartoon contributions to the Spanish newspaper El País. El Roto is the most influential cartoonist in the Spanish press. His cartoons, characterized by a lucid and trenchant critique of society, appear in the Spanish newspaper El País, as well as in the insert of the International Herald Tribune sold at Spanish newsstands. His work has also appeared in German and French publications such as Pardon and Le Courier International and has been compiled into a series of books. His work has also received several awards, including the X “Francisco Cerecedo” Journalism Prize and the first award for best newspaper design from the Society for News Design, the “Best of Newspaper Design” Award of Excellence. As he has explained on more than one occasion, his goal is to help people remove the bandages that often prevent them from seeing the hidden mechanisms of the system.

In addition to the twenty-four drawings by El Roto, this exhibition will also include 16 panels by American political cartoonist, Jeff Danziger, whose work appears daily on The New York Times Web Site, The Huffington Post, and the National Memo. Jeff Danziger's work has also appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, The New Yorker, The International Herald Tribune, LeMonde and the Moscow Times.

The opening reception of the exhibition will include a roundtable conversation between Andrés Rábago and Jeff Danziger. The use of graphic satire in Spain and the United States will be explored, along with questions from the audience.
