Goethe was deeply involved with the scientific life of his time, and considered himself a scientist in the truest sense of the word. His major scientific interests were: 1) chemistry and physics, 2) mineralogy, geology and meteorology, 3) osteology and comparative anatomy, 3) botany and plant morphology, and 4) physiological optics. Extensive use of comparative methods qualified Goethe as the founder of comparative anatomy.
Goethe considered his Theory of Color (Farbenlehre),his most noteworthy scientific achievement. The optical experiments were followed by studies of sound, the physiology of the ear, rhythm, the qualities of musical instruments, and a theory of harmony.
No one who studies Goethe can doubt the seriousness of his scientific commitment, the range and depth of his scientific interests, and his prodigious powers of observation, all of which are inseparable from and indispensable to an understanding of his literary achievements.
